I should say that as a grad student I see a couple of good reasons why people rather apply to conferences than journals and probably part of the reason why the acceptance rate of conferences has decreased:

First, journal papers require harder work. They need to be a finished article with full results it takes around 6 up to 1 year to publish results in a journal.

2. Traveling. Why investing so much effort on a journal paper, when a conference implies you traveling somewhere, knowing people and actually visiting places to present your partial results.

I don't know but it seems clear to me that grad students prefer traveling (all paid) to exotic places rather than rewarding themselves with an actual journal publication.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3831412.post-30797748205110053422010-07-22T23:19:28.888-04:002010-07-22T23:19:28.888-04:00The only reason the Bell curve is on the Worst lis...The only reason the Bell curve is on the Worst list is because it is controversial, and more so hated by left leaning/non-objective thinkers. The major thesis of the Book has not been refuted. At best there are some technical criticisms about data presentation.Gould's response to it is by far the worst writing of his career.By far. To those who have read both ,Bell Curve and Mismeasure of Man,and can honestly judge the books sans prejudice, they most probably would swap these titles between these lists.

It is also surprising that there is no mention of any of Feynman's work.Which ,as any well read physics enthusiast will attest to,is one of the best popularizations of Physics available.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3831412.post-4185014915181520262010-06-10T02:25:40.922-04:002010-06-10T02:25:40.922-04:00***Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs and Steel is on...***Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs and Steel is one of the most overrated books ever.***

Indeed, it omits that genetic change accompanied the changes with agriculture, and population expansion. Look at the stuff on "better" movies, and the definition is one that makes more money for less input of all kinds, incidentally including artistic. The effect these sorts of movies have on our culture, versus, say - the infamous "hated but eventually recognized as a classic" - is utterly ignored.
